101 Electronic Circuits |
Most hams and hobbyists got their start in homebrewing by building simple circuits published in the various magazines. Every so often most of them could collect a bunch of popular circuits and combine them into a book - Sams, TAB Books, and the magazine publishers among others. Here's one from Gernsback, the publishers of Radio Craft magazine that is nicely organized by the number of tubes rangeing from crystal sets through the (then new) FM band (including an FM wireless broadcaster). Test equipment is also described. A copy can be downloaded from the "Attachments" section below. |

Sky King was a Hallicrafters man
Those of us pajama-clad Saturday morning visitors to the Flying Crown Ranch via our black and white Admiral TVs knew this...but it took someone who owns the DVD collection posting this image on Facebook to prove it: Sky King was a Hallicrafters man! This equipment was seen in the first year of the series, according to those in the know, and subsequently Gonset gear was most often ... Looking to Ditch Twitter? Morse Code Is Back
"For almost 20 years, Steve Galchutt, a retired graphic designer, has trekked up Colorado mountains accompanied by his pack of goats to contact strangers around the world using a language that is almost two centuries old, and that many people have given up for dead. On his climbs, Galchutt and his herd have scared away a bear grazing on raspberries, escaped from fast-moving forest fires, camped in... READ MORE |

The Knight Kit Wireless Broadcaster
How many hams - - phone operators especially -- got their start with a Knight Kit Wireless Broadcaster?Who could resist the siren song of those ads in the Knight Kit section of the Allied Radio catalog with the promise of "transmitting your voice through any AM radio"? Maybe not too far away or with the greatest fidelity, but it was a real radio transmitter! Some may not know that... READ MORE |

It all starts with the Microphone
One of the most asked questions is, “What kind of microphone should I use?”It all seems very confusing: Dynamic, Condenser, Ribbon, Electret, Large Diaphragm,Cardioid, Omni—so many technical words! Think of a microphone as a “backward”speaker: a microphone hears sound and transfers it into electricity. A speaker seeselectricity and transfers it into sound. The technic... READ MORE |

Signal need a boost? Build a 6DQ5 amp!
That's what vintage SSB enthusiast K5LYN did when he wanted more power from his Central Electronics station. Since he has it set up for transceiving using the output of the SX-115 receiver to control the frequency of the 20A, the station is dedicated to 75 meter operation anyhow, so a full bandswitched amplifier wasn't needed, and because the 20A can't provide the drive needed for a gr... YASME - Exotic DX On the Air
Yasme is a storied word in amateur radio DX circles. DX stands for “distance” and the sailboats for which Yasme is named certainly covered their share of DX, crossing the oceans and dropping anchor at exotic islands some six decades ago. In turn, amateurs around the world, the “DX-ers,” would then try to contact the Yasme captain, Danny Weil, VP2VB, an amateur operator of r... READ MORE |

The Antenna Dilemma
While all new hams faced the question of what kind of antenna to put up - most had to quickly abandon dreams of a big tower with a huge beam for a number of reasons. The challenge was to get some kind of antenna up that would radiate effectively on the desired bands but would not become a target for lightning - or equally energetic complaints from wifes, parents, or neighbors.&nb... A Tour of Apollo Mission Control
In the 1960s and early 70s we watched seemingly endless hours of television showing men with crew cuts wearing white shirts and narrow ties sitting in front of consoles and wearing telephone-operator type headsets. What were they doing exactly? What was the function of those consoles? Ars Technica presents an explanation of Apollo Mission Control, con... READ MORE |

Deer vs Coax
I enjoy DX-ing the longwave beacon band but it's strictly a wintertime activity. Not just because of summertime QRN and propagation but because the best spot for my active LW whip antenna is at a corner of my property and rather than bury the coaxial feedline, I just lay it on the ground every fall after the leaves are gone and roll it up in the springtime. I'd just completed thi... READ MORE |

Bicycle Mobile - the hard way!
Paul (WA6CJC) and Ed Heyman (WA6EOA) were ham buddies who met at Alexander Hamilton High School on the west side of Los Angeles in the 1950s. They got the idea to do something interesting and unique involving radio and lamented the fact that they weren't old enough to drive and didn't have a car to go mobile in. Then inspiration struck - the had bicycles and they had a ra... READ MORE |

The Patented Waters Phone Patch
Phone patches were a common activity on the ham bands for many years. Although it was not difficult to homebrew a patch, many hams bought commercial units, often in kit form from Heathkit but assembled phone patches were also sold by Gonset, WRL, EF Johnson/NYE Viking, and were incorporated into nearly every multifunction station console from Collins, Drake, Heathkit, Galaxy and ... The National MB-40-SL tuning assembly
It's probably safe to say that no company produced more components for radio builders than the National Radio Company of Malden Mass., many of which were designed by radio engineer extrordinaire James Millen W1HRX. Having acquired a degree in mechanical engineering at Stevens Institute, Millen always stressed solid mechanical design principles in National'... READ MORE |

The "Art" of Homebrewing
Homebrewing has always been a big part of ham radio, but it clearly peaked during the period following WWII when surplus components became availalbe in quantity and at low prices. Most large cities had at least one surplus store and the supply was so great that authors wrote magazine articles based around surplus components because they knew readers would have no problem in finding them. But ... The Cuban-American Radio War of 1962
Everyone knows the history of the "Missiles of October" - the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. But many - even dedicated radio fans - may not know that 10 US AM radio stations joined the fight against the threat of nuclear proliferation by becoming the medium wave extension of the Voice of America. Triad transformer archive
In an era when many legacy companies seem to have forgotten their legacy, or have been bought out and remnants of their vintage past have been scrubbed from their websites, it's nice to see a company that does just the opposite.Triad Transformers has been around since 1943 and embraces its past, as a supplier that powered everything from Leo Fender's guitar amplifiers to the Apollo missions....
